Auckland: Tao Restaurant & Bar

Through my laziness of walking down the road to have dinner being too lazy to cook nearing Xmas, I headed to the recently opened Tao Restaurant and Bar in Newmarket. After seeing pictures online of the dumplings, it was added to the list.Β

Sadly I am an idiot who can’t read or its not clear that the dumplings are only available at lunch – (reason i went to this place). Any who, the menu again another place made for sharing, food comes out when its ready, although at least most of the food came out near somewhat the same time, and was steaming hot.

Between two of us we ordered three small dishes and 1 large, being satisfyingly full without the button on the jeans bursting. The carrot and coriander veggie ball, whilst a cool idea, just tasted more like a savoury doughnut. The carrot was really lost and that parmesan really needed to be shaved on for any real flavour – season it up!

On most occasions you can’t go too wrong with soft shell crab, but the side salad (a bit of rocket leaves) – bit random and unnecessary – either ditch it all together or at least dress the salad and give it a purpose.

We both agreed that the wok tossed squid was well presented, well textured and perfectly cooked. It wasn’t trying too hard and well worth re-ordering. The lamb wonton’s I was actually pleasantly surprised and actually expecting them to be deep-fried. They were soft and velvety. I can see how using lamb is their way of bringing in that fusion – though to be honest you wouldn’t really notice the difference, only that they are softer in texture due to the fat content in lamb, though as Manu says, “Where is the Sauce”. For these wontons are the reason I would come back to try the dumplings at lunch – again though ditch the rocket – it doesn’t belong!

Maybe some teething issues but overall the staff are friendly and efficient and was happy to oblige with our food intolerance request. If anything the portion sizes were good and we were happily satisfied on departure.
