Who can keep up with another Asian fusion eatery in the Auckland food scene! I have been here twice both times for lunch. Its a bit of a catch 22, it has a great outdoor seating which is perfect for summer, but eating dishes which are majorly curries it can be a bit of a hot sweaty mess.
With more of a Thai influence to the menu, all the dishes are designed for sharing and are served when ready. I have now been here twice – must be a good sign that I came back after the first visit.
From a combination of both of my visits heres the low down:
- Beef brisket steamed bao: very underwhelming, why? The bao itself is not handmade, and the fillings are very average and from the photo you can see its not that appetising, and to be honest $11 for 1 bun is extremely over priced. At least serve 2 baos.
- Hiramasa Kingfish Sashimi: Deliciously light, and a great balance of flavours, salty, sour, sweet and spicy. Beautifully presented and a must to order.
- Summer Rolls (Pork & Prawn and Cured Salmon): Having both I would say give it a miss and not worth another $14. Salmon rolls have too much rocket. The pork & prawn rolls have far too much vermicelli and you can’t even taste the pork & prawn with the size and flavour of these proteins.
- Crispy Hapuka Dry Red Curry: Winning dish for ‘Taste of Auckland’ this year. This deserved the win. The flavour is bang on and the fish was cooked perfectly, and due to it being deep fried, it was crispy goodness, however again for $29 it wasn’t exactly a dish you would be full to eat on its own.
I would recommend Tok Tok, although overall I think spending $80 for lunch for 2x people not including drinks was a tad steep. I guess its reaching that target market on the higher end of the scale. A few other dishes we ordered, which I rate – Manuka Smoked Salmon Curry, and the Black Pepper Venison Salad if you can take a hot punch and you really can’t go too wrong ordering Roti!
