Miss Istanbul is a relatively new eatery located in the heart of trendy scene, Ponsonby Central fitted out in the previously located Fish Fish. The two owners – one serving us and one making the food, took me back to the authentic Turkish eateries where eateries are family run where there was only little English spoken.
Miss Istanbul was a refreshing change serving food where the menu is short and sweet, serving simple honest Turkish food, steering away from your 3am kebab.
Between two of us we ordered four dishes to share. The Fried Halloumi with fig jam isn’t on any ordinary menu, although I loved the concept, the cheese was slightly overdone turning borderline rubbery. Turkish Cuisine is all about mezze and sharing the dishes with your loved ones or friends. Who doesnt love anything deep fried? Ordering the Sigara and Talas Boreks, were the perfect items to fit that purpose which had a great crunchy texture. Lastly the Anatolian Lamb was beautifully slow cooked, however for a larger mezze, the dish was probably a bit on the smaller side for $19.50, and the salad just lacked a bit of imagination. The hummus served with the dish was smooth and flavourful, it would have been great to have more.
The service was served efficiently and hot. The decor of the indoor but open eatery is intimate and brings an authentic vibe.
