New kid on the block of Kingsland’s New North Road, Chicka has just taken up the previous spot of Al’s Deli, serving up its hungry diners Korean fried chicken and beer. Who can’t turn down that combo?
This is definitely not the place you want to eat out whilst counting those calories, but hey it’s Xmas and isn’t this the time to be merry? Between the 4 of us we just shared a couple plates of the fried chicken, one of the cheeeeeesy fondues and few of the smaller sides.
I love that Korean fried chicken is slowly making its way here after feasting my fat face on a whole heap of it in London. Ordering the Chicka Wow Wow although the idea is there, it was delicious but lacked a Thai Curry flavouring as put on the menu. The Chicka Original was again well cooked, with a great crispy texture as expected, but the three side sauces weren’t anything extraordinary.
The Corn Cheesy had to be a highlight on the menu. Can you really expect hot cheese not to be a winner? but the flavour profile gave you that feeling ‘I just can’t stop, please just let me keep eating’.
We all agreed the Rice Balls lacked a lot of flavour and a disappointment on the menu. It would be great if they were deep fried or had some sort of surprise filling inside. A few pain points worth mentioning, there were a lot of little fruit flies hanging around whilst eating which is a big turn off, and more so with the dishes being over-priced. I think in these early stages they are still having teething issues which will hopefully be corrected in the near future. What does this mean for Chicka now? It is so-so on its way to great.
